To some of the robust members of the Association, the best way, as well as the most traditional way to celebrate Tuen Ng Festival is to participate in an ancient sport that can be dated back to centuries ago - the Dragon Boat Race! Under the enthusiastic and devoted leadership of Dr. Peter Cho-yiu Wong, the Hong Kong Medical Association Dragon Boat Team was born in 1990. The Team practised regularly and whole-heartedly before competing for the first time for the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club Cup of the International Dragon Boat Race organized by Hong Kong Tourist Association in June 1990. Although the Team failed to make it to the finals, the team spirit was excellent and all participants thoroughly enjoyed the sweating and panting in the waters in Tsimshatsui East.

In June 1992, the Association who was the mastermind behind the Professional Championship Race, entered the Professional Championship Race of the International Dragon Boat Race to compete "apples with apples". The HKMA Team, with team members with an average age of 45, was the 1st runner-up during the preliminary heat and ranked 5th in the final competition. After continuous hard work, the HKMA Dragon Boat Team had won the 2nd runner-up of the Professional Championship Race. In the following years, the HKMA team also won the Dr. David Fang Cup in the Professional Championship Race as the fastest medical team.

In 1995, when the Association celebrates its 75th anniversary, the HKMA Team won the 75th Anniversary Dragon Boat Trophy of the HKMA and the David Fang Cup for the fastest medical team in the Professional Championship Race. The trophies were indeed tremendous encouragement to the enthusiastic member rowers.
